Biogeomagnetism is about the interactions of organisms with the geomagnetic field. Its research topics investigated are truly interdisciplinary. Our recent studies are: |
|
Animal Magnetoreceptor: Diverse animals are capable of using the earth's magnetic field for their orientation. Homing pigeons are famous for their excellent orientation ability. We are interested in the magnetite particles found in the pigeons' head as magnetoreceptor candidate. From magnetic measurements, we try to explain the principal features of the magnetic sense in homing pigeons. |

Magnetoferritin: Ferromagnetic nanocrystals of magnetite, and magnetite/maghemite within the ferritin cavity construct a magnetic protein "magnetoferritin". Nanometer-sized magnetic particles have unique magnetic properties. We try to investigate the magnetic properties, including low-temperature magnetic properties, and magnetite biomineralization in magnetoferritin. |
