Women are, and always have been, scientists.
For a long time since P.R. China was
founded in 1949, all the Chinese women enjoyed equal rights as men. In the
countryside, females received the same land as the males and they were proud of
their working capability. In cities, females had equal chance to work and got an
equal salary. Most wives and mothers could continue their work until retirement
age. They had a legal vacation after having a baby. The popular slogan at that
time was women hold half the sky.
However, things have gradually changed in the last decade. Females have more
difficulty in job hunting. More and more bosses (including some female bosses)
are starting to declare that they will not hire women. Even worse, many well
educated females are starting to doubt about they own capability and believe men
are superior over women. That's a backward step of the society and even men
can't benefit from this in the long term. Of course every one has the right to
choose their life style, but females shouldn't suspect their own capability and
they should continue the professional work if they enjoy it.
Here
we try to provide an electronic meeting place to help female students enter and
stay in science. Any advice and comment are welcomed. huaiyuhe@mail.igcas.ac.cn
